The Red Oak

Original Antique Oil Painting From France: French School of the 19th century oil on canvas painting, double signed A.M Leveille and Omer Hippolyte Ballüe (1817-1867), dated 1842.

The surface of the canvas is smooth. This is a complex work in its play of light which reflects a beautiful and imposing perspective. A depth emerges thanks to the thick clouds charged with light, coming through the heavy foliage of the oak. Omer Hippolyte Ballüe unveils most of the details without ever betraying the Barbizon School and its calibrated approach to dark areas that sublimate that which springs to light. There is a small stream which is hardly noticeable at first, but nonetheless an important detail of this scene, as are other aspects that emerge upon further inspection.

About the artist: Omer Hippolyte Ballüe (1817-1867) is a French landscape painter. He was a pupil of Narcisse Díaz de la Peña (1807-1876) who was part of École de Barbizon. Ballüe was one of the most gifted of his generation and followed in the footsteps of Théodore Géricault and Eugène Delacroix. He took particular care the details and the finish of the skies, coming as close as possible to real perspectives. The balance of light and dark is a trademark of the l'École de Barbizon. The artist exhibited in Paris from 1842 to 1851.
