The Church

$620.00 Regular price $740.00

Original vintage oil painting from France: French School of the 20th-century oil on carton painting, attributed to Jules-Alfred Hervé-Mathé (1868-1953) and titled "L'Église" (The Church).

The texture of painting on the carton oscillates between smooth, and more worked and textured areas. The color palette used is deeply realistic and contributes to the balance of light. The reflections in the water are neat and respect the impressionist codes.

"The favorite painter of the Sarthois," Mathé was a student of several renowned painters and teachers, including Benjamin-Constant, Jean-Paul Laurens, Marcel Baschet, and Albert Maignan. Mathé was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français in Paris starting in 1909. In 1914, he was sent as an artist to the Front during the First World War, where he drew war scenes, many of which are kept in Paris at the Army Museum. After the First World War, he focused on landscapes and seascapes, especially the Bretagne coasts which inspired his many seascapes, portraits of fishermen and ports.
