Fine European Antique Oil Painting on Canvas with Carved Frame: Belgian School from the beginning of the 20th century, signed Eugène Colignon (1876–1961).
The canvas has a natural texture that rolls through the landscape giving a beautiful depth to the painting. Colignon frees himself from codes by mixing impressionist techniques (such as with the trees in the background) and academic details (as seen in the tiles and reflections of the house). This mix of genres gives a luminous natural result and creates a strong immersive experience, sublimated by a warm palette resembling a summer house in the hills of the South.
About the artist: Eugène Colignon (1876–1961) was trained at Beaux-Arts Academy of Namur and was a student of Désiré Merny (1865-1947). He continued his apprenticeship at the Brussels Academy with Isidore Verheyden (1846-1905), painter of portraits, landscapes, seascapes and nudes. Colignon was a member of the Groupe des XX (1883-1893), along with Félicien Rops, James Ensor, Constantin Meunier, Théo Van Rysselberghe and others. This circle played a non-negligible role in the blossoming of modern art, welcoming to its exhibitions artists who have since become famous, such as Van Gogh and Rodin. Colignon was interested throughout his career in the rendering and expression of light through numerous researches during his travels in Brittany, Italy, Algeria.
