Antique French Watercolor Painting: Gaston Vuillier was a painter with an unusual and romantic life. Born in Perpignan on October 7, 1845, Gaston was the son of a young servant, Anne Pont and of Paul Vuillier, a forge master living in the Boulzane valley. He spent his childhood in the Aude located in the Pyrenees mountain range. 

In 1878, the young handsome painter, was working for Hachette, a famous French publishing house, which hired him as an illustrator. From 1892, he was in Corrèze, in Gimel-Les-Cascades, that Gaston found his place, fascinated by the beauty of the local landscapes. He fought fiercely to conserve waterfall sites.

He painted famous works and self-portraits such as "Le Vocero", "La Sorcière", "Le Pavillon", "Au bord de l'Etang". He was also passionate about Mediterranean countries, and he published works about Sicily, Tunisia, Corsica, Sardinia. It was during one of his visits to Spain that he painted this magnificent portrait of this Grenadian woman.

He was also particularly attached to the Balearics, and in 1888 published "Voyage aux Îles Baléares." He passed away in 1915, in Gimel-Les-Cascades. Corrèze, he was 69 years old.

  • Condition: Great condition. Watercolor on paper protected by glass. The frame is not original but in perfect condition with the blackened details which gives character. There is a small gap between the frame and the glass upper left corner.
