Langouste

£703.00

20th-century large-scale oil painting on canvas signed Paul Hogg (1889–1985) in the lower right corner.

A richly composed still life featuring lobster, sliced lemon, onion, egg, baguette, knife, pitcher, and porcelain, all arranged atop white linen on a wooden table set against a dark background. It’s a beautifully curated kitchen scene that balances rustic essentials with touches of indulgence. The weight of the stoneware pitcher contrasts with the soft folds of the linen, which are among the finest examples of the artist’s technical mastery.

The vivid pops of color in the lobster and lemon are particularly striking in an otherwise earthy, restrained palette. Impressive in both scale and symbolic composition, the painting is housed in a vintage frame lined in linen. Condition is quite good, with a few small flecks of missing paint, most notably along the lower left edge where the canvas has lightly rubbed against the frame.

About the artist:

Born in Fribourg, Paul Hogg trained in Paris beginning in 1910. He studied at the École des Arts Décoratifs and later in Fernand Cormon’s studio at the École des Beaux-Arts. In 1924, he became a member of the Salon d’Automne and exhibited regularly at the Tuileries and the Salon des Indépendants.

Hogg’s travels throughout North Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, and Morocco), inspired a warm, luminous palette that became a hallmark of his work. In 1937, he was awarded the Order of Ouissam Alaouite for his artistic contributions.

On the eve of World War II, he settled in Sanary-sur-Mer on the French Riviera and became an active member of the local art scene. He remained closely connected to his native Switzerland, frequently exhibiting there and painting the lush landscapes of the Gruyère region. Though briefly influenced by André Lhote, Hogg ultimately developed a clear, harmonious style rooted in balance and light.
