Effet d'Automne

20th-century oil painting on carton signed Georges Darnet (1859–1936) in the lower left corner. On the reverse: a handwritten label, partially faded, with a possible reading "Étang de Ruffaud (Corrèze)" (translated: "Ruffaud Pond, Corrèze") and titled "Effet d'automne" (Autumn Effect).

This landscape on hard carton is quintessentially autumnal, with golden browns and hazy blues reflecting across trees, water, and sky. Darnet captures the lightness within stillness, likely late afternoon, demonstrating the naturalist sensibility developed during his training at the Beaux-Arts. His broad, cross-hatched brushstrokes give the scene a quiet depth: deceptively simple from a distance, yet richly layered up close.

The painting features curved corners and some minor paint loss, but remains in overall good condition. It would display beautifully framed or casually propped on a bookshelf or desk.

About the artist:

Georges Darnet (1859–1936) was born in Périgueux (Nouvelle-Aquitaine) and is best known for his landscapes of the Périgord, Corrèze, and views along the Isle in Dordogne.
He studied under Amédée Baudit and Paul Saïn.

During his time at the Beaux-Arts, he developed a naturalistic approach focused on rural light and quiet motifs.

Darnet was a regular exhibitor at the Salon des Artistes Français, receiving an honorable mention in 1920 and a bronze medal in 1928.
