Cagnes-sur-Mer

19th-century oil on wooden panel, signed lower left J. Vernay for Joséphine Vernay (1861–?). The location, Cagnes-sur-Mer, is noted on the reverse. Haut-de-Cagnes, a medieval village, attracted a significant artistic community in the early 20th century. Pierre-Auguste Renoir spent his final years there, drawn by the Mediterranean climate and landscape.

A small-format landscape depicting the village rising on its hill. The brushwork is short and controlled, with light surface texture. Umbrella pines structure the foreground, leading across mineral terrain toward a path and a band of green before the village appears as a compact, luminous mass. The composition is stable and well contained within its original wooden frame.

About the artist:

Joséphine Vernay was a Swiss painter born in 1861; her date of death is unknown. Active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, she worked primarily in oil and watercolor, focusing on Mediterranean landscapes, coastal views, and architectural subjects in the South of France and Italy.
