La Colline
20th-century oil on hard carton, signed Max Lenant (signature partially illegible) in the lower right, dedicated “À Jean Marin” and dated 1934.
A rolling pastoral landscape viewed from a gentle ascent, the eye lifted toward a lavender sky streaked with vivid pink, yellow, and orange. The sunset dominates the upper half of the composition, its light pressing down against the darkened greens of the hill.
The surface is heavily worked. Impasto is pronounced, with directional striations carving movement across the sky and land. The paint appears applied with a palette knife, the material relief becoming integral to the structure of the scene. Texture carries as much weight as color.
At the summit, a compact form rises against the sky, ambiguous in nature, perhaps a shrub, a small structure, or a haystack. Its indistinct identity reinforces the painting’s expressive, almost abstract quality.
Executed in 1934, the work reflects a moment when gesture and surface began to rival naturalistic description. Here, landscape becomes atmosphere and material at once.

- Creation date: 1934.
- Condition: The work shows a few small paint losses concentrated in the center, visible as white spots. The lower right corner is not rounded in the same way as the others, but this does not appear to result from damage and is likely due to the original shape of the cardboard. The upper left corner presents losses and minor accidents, and there are small losses along the edges consistent with past framing.
