La Maison
20th-century large-scale oil on canvas, signed lower right Henri Goerg (1898–1971). The reverse features a painted study of a church tower.
The composition centers on a French country house with green shutters and open windows overlooking a vegetable garden, or potager. To the right, a church bell tower rises above the scene, topped with a weathervane and rendered with characteristic regional detail. The architecture and garden are treated with broad, textured brushstrokes.
Vegetation structures the foreground, partially screening the buildings and guiding the eye inward. The palette is warm, with measured tonal contrasts that emphasize light and atmosphere. The handling remains confident and open, consistent with a post-impressionist sensibility.
The gilded frame complements the warmth of the composition and reinforces its balance.
About the artist:
Henri Goerg (1898–1971) was a French painter and printmaker born in Paris. He trained at the Académie Ranson under Maurice Denis and Paul Sérusier. Active during the interwar period, he was associated with the Nouvelle École de Paris, a loose grouping of figurative painters working in Paris between the 1930s and 1950s.
Goerg exhibited regularly at the Salon d’Automne and the Salon des Indépendants from the 1920s onward. In addition to painting, he produced a substantial body of graphic work noted for its technical precision.

- Size without the frame: 19.6" x 24" / 50cm x 61.5cm.
- Country of origin: France
- Signature: Henri Georg (1888-1971).
- Creation date: 1925.
- Condition: A visible white mark extends over 2.3" to the right of the bell tower and seems to correspond to an accident, the canvas is not open but slightly depressed. Another whitish mark, less visible, is present a little below, between the signature and the church. However, the work has a thick patina which protects it over the long term. The old gilded frame shows signs of use and multiple lack of gilding consistent with time.
