Vue Provençal
20th century oil on hardboard signed Auclair (20th century) lower right. A French artist named André Auclair (1893–1976) is documented during the same period, however, further research would be required to confirm direct attribution.
The scene evokes a hilltop village in the south of France, probably in Provence, recognizable by its red tiled roofs, slender cypresses, and dry southern light.
A very lively work with oil applied in pronounced impasto. The surface is highly tactile, almost sculptural. The brush or knife strokes are broad, overflowing with energy and direction. Movement is visible, almost organic; at times the artist even shifts toward abstraction, as in the middle ground with the haystack and the tree on the left, both extremely textured.
Light here is not atmospheric: it is contained within the material itself. The landscape becomes an almost vibrant surface, conveying the warmth of the South and its distinctive light. The palette is lively without being excessive, reminding us that this southern view remains a structured interpretation rooted in the Impressionist heritage.
