L'arbre
19th century oil on wood panel signed Albert Dagnaux (1861–1933), with the location indicated on the back as Mantes-la-Jolie, near Paris.
A charming landscape with Impressionist accents, painted in chiaroscuro with graphic poetry. A tree curves over the water, naturally guiding the gaze to the center of the scene.
Nuanced reflections on the water, touches of pink in the leaves, diffuse light: the composition plays with contrasts and diagonal lines to bring out a balanced serenity.
Albert Dagnaux, who studied at the École des Beaux-Arts, regularly painted the banks of the Seine, in particular around Mantes and Rolleboise. He showed his work at the Parisian salons of 1890. Some of his paintings are part of public collections, like the Museum of Vernon.
