Les Roseaux

19th-century oil on panel by Camille Roqueplan (1802–1855), signed lower left, presented in a richly carved gilded wood and stucco channel frame from the 19th century. A small metal plaque bearing the artist's name is affixed to the lower horizontal edge of the frame.

Between Romanticism and Realism, in this river painting, Camille Roqueplan depicts three figures busy cutting and harvesting reeds. The movements of the bodies and their positions attest to a life of rural labor, a subject that the artist ultimately explored in a deliberate way at the end of his career.

The brushstrokes are precise and academic and the light holds an important place in the composition. The tree on the left as well as the bank of the river are the first indicators of depth, paired with the dark neighboring bank, where we can make out the bell tower of a church. The sky and thick clouds are brilliantly rendered with textured strokes and bright highlights.

Camille Roqueplan was a known landscape painter of his time. Student of Antoine-Jean Gros, he taught Narcisse Diaz. His works are exhibited in many French museums, including the Louvre.
