Lac de Nuit
A rare river nocturne, and French naturalist work of the mid-19th century. The work is on hard carton in its original Barbizon-style sculpted wood frame.
This piece depicts a river lined with trees beneath a cloudy sky. The use of light shows an attention to direct observation, with a sky treated with layers and dark areas contrasting with reflections in the water. The palette remains sober, dominated by browns and shades of green and grey, close to those used by the artists of the Barbizon school. The silhouette of the central tree in the background stands out from the view and provides notable depth.
A good example of French landscape painting of the second half of the 19th century, between academic tradition and direct observation, just before the Impressionist boom.
