La Chaumière

19th-century oil painting on wooden panel, signed Bruno (19th century) in the lower right.

A charming and intimate forest landscape painted on a small wooden panel, depicting two bonneted figures, perhaps a mother and child, standing before a tiny woodland cottage.

The composition is handled with delicate precision, the brushwork compact and regular, with subtle areas of thicker texture adding movement throughout the foliage and sky. The forest seems to bloom out of the landscape, against a blue sky. The light is cast directly on the figures, with the whites in their outfits radiating.

Despite its modest scale, the painting carries a strong sense of atmosphere and calm. The balanced composition and restrained palette evoke the quiet poetry of rural 19th-century life, while the warm gilt period frame sits beautifully in harmony with the earthy tones of the scene.

The original gold gilded frame adds character and creates a distinctly French antique aesthetic.
