£728.00

Early 20th-century oil on canvas, signed in the lower right with an unidentified signature. This painting depicts an industrial landscape, probably a quarry or extraction site, where two imposing dark hills in the foreground open onto a group of factories on the horizon.

In the upper left, a wooden platform extending out over a steep drop supports several workers transporting materials in wheelbarrows or small carts. Their silhouettes stand out clearly against the luminous sky. Further away, between the two hills, several industrial chimneys release plumes of smoke that gradually blend into the low clouds. The scene evokes the transformation of the landscape through industrialization and the place of human labor within it.

The composition is particularly interesting for its vertical format. Two large masses of earth, painted in a very dark palette of browns, blacks, and deep blues, frame an opening toward the horizon. A stretch of ochre-colored earth and a few touches of light create a transition toward the industrial buildings, enhancing the depth of the scene. Above, the sky occupies a considerable portion of the composition, creating a striking contrast with the density of the hills.

The brushwork is expressive, at times broad and slightly textured, particularly in the sky, where the movements of the brush, complemented by palette knife work, remain visible.

The painting has a distinctive atmosphere, both dark and luminous.

The canvas shows some old craquelure across the two hills, now stabilized, which blends naturally with the subject. The painting is presented in a classic gilt frame in very good condition, lending a certain nobility to this industrial scene.

  • Overall Size: 29.5" × 21.7" / 75cm × 55cm.
  • Size without the frame: 23.6" × 15.7" / 60cm × 40cm.
  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: Yes (illegible).
  • Creation date: Early 20th century.
  • Conditions: As mentioned in the description, the canvas shows some old, stabilized craquelure, visible across the two hills. These naturally blend with the painted texture of the landscape.
A small area of paint loss, measuring less than 0.3 in, is visible near the center of the left hill. The painting has a beautiful protective varnish.
The antique wooden frame shows only a few minor impacts and signs of wear. There is some slight wear to the velvet lining along the lower horizontal edge, which does not detract from the overall appearance of the painting or the visual balance of the frame.
