Les Chevaux

20th-century oil on canvas depicting two horses grazing in a meadow, signed Frida P. in the lower left corner.

Originating from the Perche region of Normandy, France, this painting may depict two Percheron horses in a meadow. The work is characterized by loose, Impressionist-inspired brushwork, favoring impressions of light and movement over detailed anatomical representation.

The brushstrokes are broad and spontaneous throughout the landscape, with areas of slight impasto, while the treatment becomes more precise on the horses, particularly in the rendering of shadows and the subtle variations in their coats. Both animals appear captured in natural movement. The second horse's head, with its softer contours compared to the rest of its body, seems almost to vibrate, as though the artist were attempting to capture a fleeting movement.

The luminous palette evokes the gentle warmth of an afternoon in the countryside. The landscape, reduced to a few lines and touches of color, gives prominence to the animals and the peaceful atmosphere of the scene.

The painting is presented in a simple natural wood frame, whose rustic character complements the subject particularly well.
