Romantic Landscape

£996.00

This 19th-century landscape, painted in oil on wood panel and signed lower right with a signature that appears to read “Chamby,” depicts a low mountain landscape by a lake. The elongated rectangular format of the panel gives the composition a true panoramic dimension, allowing the eye to travel gradually through the landscape, from the dark vegetation in the foreground to the mountains and sky on the horizon.

The scene appears to take place at the end of the day. In the foreground, dense nature, dominated by deep green tones, occupies a significant part of the composition. Three figures appear amid the vegetation. One stands to the left, slightly isolated, while two other figures, also standing, face him near the lake. Their still presence introduces a subtle narrative dimension. A story seems to be unfolding before us, without the painter ever truly revealing its nature.

The interplay of light further enhances this mysterious atmosphere. The deliberately dark foreground envelops the figures and vegetation, while the light gradually diffuses as the eye moves deeper into the landscape. It opens onto the lake, reaches the village along the opposite shore, then the mountains, before finding its full expression in the sky.

This particularly successful gradation of light naturally gives depth to the composition. It guides the eye through the different planes and creates a subtle contrast between the almost secret intimacy of the foreground scene and the luminous openness of the panorama. The landscape thus takes on a Romantic quality, in which the human presence remains small in the face of the vastness of nature.

The work is presented in its imposing antique giltwood and gesso frame, richly molded and decorated with foliate motifs. Its depth and substantial molding extend the Romantic character of the landscape and further enhance the panoramic effect of the view.

  • Overall Size: 16.9" x 24" / 43 x 61cm.

  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: Yes (illegible).
  • Creation date: Late 19th century.
  • Conditions: The panel shows a few small losses along the lower edge, at the frame line, resulting from a previous framing. These do not affect the overall appearance of the work. A few small, dark circular spots are also visible in the sky. They are old and stable, and remain discreet within the composition. The antique solid wood molded frame is in very good condition considering its age, with the overall front remarkably well preserved. A few losses are present on the recessed sections of the frame’s molding, but these are barely visible when the work is viewed from the front.
