The River

Oil on hardboard, signed Émile Marithez (signature reading to be confirmed) and dated August 1911, depicting a tree-lined landscape beside the water.

This painting stands out for its free, expressive brushwork and the vitality it conveys. Trees occupy much of the composition, their generous foliage standing out against a luminous sky scattered with white clouds. In the foreground, a stretch of water borders dense vegetation, while an opening to the right gives the landscape a sense of space.

The broad, visible brushstrokes take on undulating, sometimes almost swirling forms. The paint is applied in textured strokes, at times suggesting the use of a palette knife. This expressive technique brings movement to the foliage and clouds, giving the entire scene a remarkable sense of life.

The fresh, luminous palette is particularly harmonious. The contrasts between the masses of greenery and the openings in the sky reveal a beautiful command of light. The Impressionist approach favors sensation and spontaneity, creating a summery atmosphere that feels entirely in keeping with the date inscribed on the painting.

The work is presented in a decorative, lightweight frame, combining softly toned gilding with darker moldings. Its understated design naturally complements the painting's palette and luminous character.
