20th-century large-scale oil on canvas bearing an old label on the reverse with a number, likely assigned at a fair, and the monogram V.B.K for Verband der Bildenden Künstler Österreichs. Founded in 1861, this association is one of Austria’s principal professional artists’ groups.

A canal view in the Northern tradition, structured around a cathedral with a prominent bell tower. In the foreground, moving water and moored boats establish depth and scale. The middle ground opens onto low riverside architecture bordered by trees.

The cathedral rises in the distance, its verticality balanced by the horizontal sweep of the river. The composition is clear and ordered. Brushwork remains measured yet active, and the palette relies on cool tonal transitions, with purples and muted blues suggesting a northern atmosphere.

The light wooden frame with subtle gilding complements the restrained character of the painting.
