La Traversée

£571.00

19th-century oil painting on wooden panel, signed lower left by Gustave Colin (1828–1910).

The painting depicts a mountain landscape, likely in the Pyrenees, where the artist painted extensively. The foreground is animated by a flowing river, along whose banks a woman, dressed in traditional 19th-century rural clothing, walks along a mountain path with her children. A baby is strapped to her back, while a young child holds her hand. A donkey follows closely behind, likely carrying provisions, and several other figures can be seen in the distance.

The scene is full of life and movement, created through a harmonious palette and the artist's thoughtful handling of light. A remarkable variety of brushwork further enriches the composition. The rocks are painted with broad, fluid passages, while the figures are rendered with tighter, more textured strokes, giving them a strong sense of presence against the expansive landscape.

A work of wonderful narrative quality and quiet dynamism, conveyed through both the artist's technique and the balance of the composition. The original gold leaf frame, with its delicate beaded detailing, beautifully complements the painting and enhances its timeless character.

About the artist:

Gustave Colin is best known for his landscapes of the Basque Country, particularly his depictions of the village of Pasajes de San Juan.

Born in northern France, he first studied under Constant Dutilleux in Arras before continuing his training in Paris with Ary Scheffer, Thomas Couture, and Camille Corot, whose influence would leave a lasting mark on his work.

He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1857 and received numerous awards throughout his career, including a Gold Medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1900.

In 1863, he participated in the Salon des Refusés alongside Édouard Manet, who famously exhibited Le Déjeuner sur l'herbe that same year.

In 1874, Colin took part in the first Impressionist exhibition, exhibiting five works. Later in his career, he taught at the Académie Julian in Paris, passing on his knowledge to a new generation of artists.

Although originally from northern France, he eventually settled in the Basque Country, whose landscapes became the defining subject of much of his work.

Today, his paintings are held in the collections of numerous public museums, including the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lille, the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Marseille, the Musée Basque et de l'Histoire de Bayonne, and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Pau, among others.
