20th-century atelier painting and study of a catch of fish. This painting is from Brittany, and painter Charles Martin-Sauvaigo (1881-1970). The front is unsigned, but the back of the work possesses the atelier stamp and artist's name.

A unique atelier piece, the painting is unfinished. The upper third of the painting is bare wood, where the artist did not finish applying oil paint. The bare wood adds a certain cachet to this piece, and due to the organic color, it feels almost natural. The fish themselves are painted with expressive brushstrokes, quickly, and with blocks of color used in the background to test contrast and tone. On the reverse of the painting, you can see the artist began another piece.

The 1800's inlay and carved gold leaf frame adds an elegance to the work.
