About the artist

Émile Valentina Cardinal (1885–1958) was a French painter associated with the School of Paris. Active during the first half of the twentieth century, she developed a body of work centered on still lifes, floral compositions, and intimate interior scenes.

Working within the vibrant artistic climate of interwar Paris, Cardinal embraced the freedom of color and expressive brushwork that emerged from Post-Impressionism and the School of Paris. Her paintings are distinguished by simplified forms, visible brushwork, and a refined sense of decorative harmony.
