Forest Path
20th-century oil painting on hardboard panel, signed Gabriel Soulard (20th century), in the lower right.
A view of a forest path meandering, almost river-like, between rows of tall leafy trees. The path and the foliage are painted with similar dashed, impressionistic brush strokes, using the same tones of green, yellow, brown and peach. The effect is that the viewer is swimming in forest.
The depth of the scene is enhanced by broader, more textured touches in the foreground, becoming more refined with perspective. While the trees completely crowd out the sky, there is a sense of lightness and joy to the density.
The frame has folk motif details in the corners, complementing the natural tones of the painting. The gradual layers of painted interior framing from gold to brown to green to blue to gold, again, also mirror the folk style.
