La Vallée

£613.00

Oil on hardboard dated 1912, bearing a difficult-to-decipher signature in the lower right. The painting depicts a charming hilly landscape, with a thatched cottage in the foreground and a thin trail of smoke rising from its chimney.

The composition unfolds through a succession of planes. From the cottage and the surrounding meadows, the eye follows the curves of the hills toward the valley opening in the distance.

The painting is characterized by an interesting contrast in technique. The brushwork is controlled and restrained across the hills and meadows, whose forms are softly defined. The sky, by contrast, is handled with much greater freedom. The brushstrokes become visible, swirling and slightly textured, bringing an unexpected sense of movement to this otherwise tranquil scene.

The strong contrast between the dark hills and the light gray tones of the sky enhances the depth of the composition. Light seems to spread across the valley, while the cottage, discreetly positioned on the right, brings a human presence to this natural landscape.

The painting is presented in a magnificent antique Barbizon-style frame, with richly ornamented moldings and a beautifully aged gilded finish, adding considerable character to the scene.
