Les Bois

Late 19th-century school oil on canvas mounted on panel, depicting a woodland scene.

The composition is centered around a large tree on the left, its branches extending across the upper part of the painting. In the center, dense vegetation unfolds in several layers, while a small sunlit clearing creates depth and opens up a view through the foliage.

The brushwork and textures are remarkably varied. In the foreground, small, energetic, textured strokes contrast with the foliage and trees, where the brushwork becomes broader and freer, alternating between finely worked passages and more pronounced areas of impasto.

The natural palette, with its deep greens and warm browns, creates a soft and harmonious whole. The light is beautifully controlled: it filters through the foliage, illuminates parts of the tree trunks, and falls upon the ground, while other areas remain in deeper shadow. This interplay of contrasts gives the scene its depth and peaceful atmosphere.

The painting is presented in a lightweight wooden frame with softly aged gilding. Its colors complement the painting's palette particularly well, naturally extending its atmosphere.
