£541.00

A 19th-century French School oil painting on metal signed (illegible) in the lower right corner. The work has a little texture to the touch.

Painting on metal (usually tin) was popular in the 1800s, largely because it was associated with highly detailed works, applied in thin layers.

In this example of a 19th-century landscape painting on tin, we can see that the artist built upon many layers of paint, finishing with highlight brushstrokes across the village and cliffs. In other areas, such as the sky, the application of oil paint is quite light, and we can even see the metal rubbed through in small sections.
