La Bergère

19th-century oil on canvas signed Émile Marion (19th century) in the lower left. The work is titled: "Bergère et ses chèvres en sous-bois" (Shepherdess and her goats in the undergrowth).

A Romantic painting at the edge of a wood. Two goats stand out in the light, accompanied by a shepherdess whose silhouette can be seen in the half-light. The clarity of the sky contrasts with the dark masses of the trees, giving depth to the whole.

Here, we're being told a story, with two animals almost spotlit near the trees and the shepherdess, her back to them, who seems to be interested in something we cannot see.

The vertical composition accentuates the height of the trees and highlights the play of light and shadow. Several touches of deep blue and green subtly animate the undergrowth.

The painting has an atmosphere similar to works of the Barbizon school, between naturalism and the first hints of Impressionism. The painting is framed in an antique gilded molding with a warm patina.

A piece that adds warmth and character to any room.
