Labours
A small landscape on canvas from the early 20th century, marked on the reverse with a label bearing the artist’s name: Lucie Lardin Descenyi (20th century) as well as the title of the work," Labours" (Plowing).
Lucie Lardin Descenyi captured a minimalist countryside scene achieved with dynamic brushwork, charged with emotions. We can make out a path that crosses the slightly hilly field, bordered by trees with knotty silhouettes.
The sky, a strong presence, is done in light impasto, contrasting with the dark forms of the tree trunks. Painted with frank gestures, the scene is typical of a post-Impressionist style.
Despite a lack of information about her life and the rest of her oeuvre, Lucie Lardin Descenyi seems to be part of the lineage of early 20th-century landscape artists who focused on the moods and movements of rural life.
The work has several marks on its surface and the frame shows light wear, consistent with its age.
