Le Beauvaisis

20th-century oil painting on wood panel signed Pierre Bokkelandt (1887–1978) in the lower right corner. The title Le Beauvaisis appears on the reverse, referring to a region in northern France, the Oise department, known for its wooded hills and agricultural landscapes.

This charming view guides us along a sloping path, bordered by trees under a cloudy sky. The composition is balanced, constructed out of successive planes that guide the gaze to the back of the landscape, which opens onto a plunging view. Light is everywhere in the landscape, softly enveloping the dark trees in the center.

The strokes are rapid but precise and the palette is reduced to the essential. The result is realistic and seems to be full of movement.

Pierre Bokkelandt was a French painter, active in the 1950s-1970s. He dedicated himself to landscapes in a post-Impressionist style, committed to composition and light.
