Les Ardennes

19th-century oil on wood panel, signed lower left E. Panneel (19th–20th century), dated 1881, painted and located in the Ardennes, a wooded region in northeastern France bordering Belgium and Luxembourg. An old fine art supply shop label from Brussels is affixed to the reverse.

This late morning or early afternoon countryside landscape depicts a calm stream winding through a lush pastoral setting. From the bright greens of field, marsh, and treeline, the eye is drawn upward to an expansive sky cushioned with clouds, which occupies more than half of the composition.

The work is executed with fine, regular brushstrokes, punctuated by areas of subtle texture that add depth and relief, particularly in the woods on the right and within the larger cloud formations. The clouds form the central structural element of the painting. Rendered in warm whites and soft blue tones, they lend balance and quiet luminosity to the scene.

An antique or period-appropriate gilded or patinated wood frame would complement its light and era. A visible thin band of brighter colors extends around the exterior of the panel, showing where the painting was protected by a previous frame.
