Plate & Lamp
20th-century oil on canvas signed on the top right Pierre Klemczynski (1910–1991) with an atelier or exhibition stamp number above. The work is titled: "L'Assiette et la lampe" (The Plate and the Lamp). The piece is additionally marked with the Pierre Klemczynski workshop stamp on the back.
A modern French composition from the second half of the 20th century centered on two day-to-day objects: a blue oil lamp and a deep dish placed on a dark brown table with an ochre background. The composition is deliberately spare, with a marked contrast between saturated hues and the neutral-colored objects in the background.
Here, Klemczynski adopts a graphic, almost symbolic approach, which recalls Post War still life studies. The perspective is intentionally flattened, the contours accentuated. The ensemble evokes certain works of the late Paris school, between stylized figuration and constructed composition.
A Polish painter who became French, he trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris before exhibiting in several salons in France in the 1950s–1970s. His work focused on objects, figures and intimate settings, with a particular attention to color and formal balance.
