Verrières

20th-century French School small scale square painting on hardboard signed (illegible) in the lower right hand corner. Thanks to an inscription on the back of the painting, we know that the scene is Verrières-de-Joux, a mountainous French commune in Burgundy, bordering Switzerland. The work has some textured areas, mostly in the lower half.

This small painting in its charming square format has a great deal of detail and movement. The small brushstrokes, and generous use of many shades of green, blue and brown for the foliage and rocky outcroppings, create a dynamic effect.

As if we are looking out from a viewpoint, we see a chateau and some small homes perched on a rocky mountain, with a larger range in the distance against a bright sky.

The painting itself is in great condition. The frame is missing one corner of moulding. This could be repainted or filled in.
