Les Quais

£616.00

20th-century oil on hardboard, signed Marc Bardon (19th & 20th century) lower left and dated 1945.

A luminous and modern Parisian riverscape, where the composition itself seems to bend and soften with the curve of the bridge. The Seine and its quays unfold in the foreground, naturally leading the eye toward one of the capital’s historic bridges, possibly the Pont Marie, suggested by its elegant arches and narrow proportions. Beyond, rows of classic Parisian stone buildings and zinc rooftops rise gently into the distance.

The painting is executed in a distinctly post-impressionist manner, with visible, textured brushwork and a free, expressive handling of paint. Reflections ripple across the surface of the Seine through layered strokes of color, while areas of striated texture suggest occasional palette knife work, bringing movement and materiality to the composition.

There is a softness and fluidity to the entire scene, reinforced by the artist’s handling of line and perspective. The gentle curve of the bridge subtly organizes the composition, creating a sense of rhythm and modernity that feels distinctly Parisian.

The light throughout the work is particularly striking. Bright and clear, it evokes a calm afternoon along the Seine and lends the painting an atmosphere of quiet renewal, especially meaningful in a work painted just after the end of WWII.
