L'automne
20th-century large-scale oil painting on hard board signed A. Hardy for André Hardy (1887–1986) in the lower right corner.
This expressive landscape captures an autumn day along a river in Normandy. A vine-covered oak tree, shedding its golden leaves, stretches its branches over the water. Hardy applies generous layers of oil, creating a textured, immersive scene filled with the colors of the season. Each leaf is rendered with intention—single brushstrokes pressed into the canvas, dotting both tree and water with rhythm and precision.
About the artist:
André Hardy (1887–1986), born in Flers (Orne) and later based in Caen, was a Norman painter known for his deep connection to the local landscape—valleys, riverbanks, hayfields, and rural life. A versatile artist, he also worked in gouache and ceramics.
His warm palette and expressive brushwork reflect a sensitive, post-Impressionist style, favoring chromatic vibration over fine detail. Hardy exhibited regularly at the Salon des Artistes Français and was an active figure in the regional art scene of the Suisse Normande. The Musée André Hardy in Clécy (Calvados) preserves a major collection of his work and continues to honor his legacy.
