Le Village
19th-century oil painting on wood panel signed in the lower right corner (illegible).
In this small-format oil painting, a woman walks down a stone path toward a village, with the sea visible in the distance. Upon closer inspection, we see she is flanked by chickens and roosters along the path and appears to be holding a basket — perhaps feeding them as she walks.
This pastoral scene was painted with quick, confident brushstrokes that create lush foliage and texture throughout the landscape. The artist also honed in on specific details, such as the woman, the chickens, and even a wooden fence that borders the left side of the path. Based on the clothing, architecture, and coastal setting, we can assume the scene is set in Brittany.
The painting is embellished by a gorgeous original wood and stucco frame, which features five distinct layers, including an inner band of gold leaf. The carving and craftsmanship of the frame alone are noteworthy. The painting shows some smudges and marks on its surface, as well as a visible pin prick hole in the upper center. The frame is missing molding in a few places.
