Les Toits

A colorful and surprising watercolor and gouache on paper, protected under glass in an antique frame, depicting rooftops and façades in an old town setting. The pointed roofs (les toits) seem to cascade and overlap at unlikely angles, creating a convergence of shingles that gives the impression the houses are built atop one another.

The composition focuses on the essentials: geometry, light, and color. Likely painted in the early 1900s, the piece retains the vivid tones of a more recent work, capturing the character of early 20th-century architecture in northern France. The work is signed, just barely visible along the lower right edge beneath the matte.
