Les Moissons

20th-century oil painting on wood panel signed Hubert Van den Bossche (1874–1957) in the lower right corner.

A very colorful and expertly executed painting, showing a field worker (woman) in the center foreground and what appears to be a more abstract figure helping her hold a long pole. The field is the true subject, however, with its wild colors and textures. Van den Bossche used brushstrokes as movement, layering them and creating contrast in their directions to evoke a living, working field in full harvest.

An impressive work that would be a lovely hero in any collection of European antique paintings. This oil on wood lives in a frame from the same era and is in good condition, except for a few surface marks on the outer edge of the painting where it meets the frame.

About the artist:

Hubert Van den Bossche (1874–1957) was a Belgian painter trained at the Academy of Brussels and a pupil of Jean Portaels (1818-1895).

He mainly painted landscapes, rural scenes, and interiors. His painting is thick and colorful: broad strokes, generous impasto, bold palette. His style remains a vibrant realism, close to a free impressionism without tipping into Fauvism.

Around 1910, he settled in a farmhouse in Leeuw-Saint-Pierre (in Belgium) that became a gathering place for young Brabant painters: Henri Roidot, Thévenet, Maurice Blieck, Bastien, and Oleffe were regulars.

His work is held in public collections, notably the Brussels City Museum (Maison du Roi), which preserves paintings such as La Maison des Barques et la maison du Cheval Marin à Bruxelles and La place de la Grue et le bassin Sainte-Catherine.
