Une Péninsule

20th-century oil painting on canvas mounted on hardboard, signed Claude Jousset (born 1935) and dated 1953 lower right.

A vibrant and highly expressive coastal landscape composed as a garden of color, movement, and juxtaposition. Rocky outcroppings animate the foreground, possibly suggesting a tidal landscape, while houses line the distant shore. Rising above the composition, a rounded hill crowned with a small white-steepled church anchors the scene and draws the eye upward through the layered landscape.

The brushwork is broad, visible, and spontaneous, reducing the landscape to its essential forms and rhythms. The composition reflects strong post-impressionist and Fauvist influences, both in its treatment of color and its simplified handling of volume. Jousset paints with remarkable freedom, allowing tones and fragments of underlying canvas to emerge naturally through the layers of paint, creating a surface that feels luminous, airy, and alive with movement.

The painting has been stabilized over time and now carries a beautifully weathered surface consistent with its expressive technique and age. Areas of exposed canvas and softened paint layers contribute to the work’s painterly character, reinforcing the raw immediacy of the composition rather than detracting from it. This textured, timeworn quality contrasts beautifully with the more traditional gilded frame, itself marked by age and patina.

About the artist:

Claude Jousset (born 1935) is a French painter trained at the École des Arts Appliqués. He first exhibited publicly in 1963, and his landscapes quickly gained recognition. In 1967, he received the First Prize for French landscape painters at the Salon des Artistes Français.

A dedicated landscape painter, Jousset depicted Paris, the French countryside, the Normandy coast, and the Venetian lagoon throughout his career. His work combines structured composition with a soft, luminous palette, and he described himself as a “painter of poetic reality.”
