Dives-sur-Mer
$320.00
A dynamic watercolor and gouache on heavy stock paper, depicting a village scene with clustered rooftops and a central church tower, anchored by visible graphite lines beneath the paint. The architecture is rendered with bold forms and expressive color, while the dramatic sky shifts in layered washes of violet, peach, and blue.
Signed Pierre Agnès (1898–1964) in the lower left, titled “Dives,” and dated 1914, the church bears a strong resemblance to Notre-Dame de Dives in Dives-sur-Mer, a historic coastal town in the Calvados region of Normandy. A vivid and atmospheric work painted on the eve of the First World War.
