Mr. Thuillet

19th-century French School oil on canvas signed Charles Edmond Daux (1855-1937) dated 1881 and dedicated "To my friend Thuillet".

The work is smooth to the touch. Portrait of a man in this three-quarter bust representing a young bourgeois. The sober light of the portraits of the time illuminates the character's head without excess. The austere palette and the academic pose contrast with this gaze charged with complicity and warmth. The man seems to trust the artist and this alchemy is perfectly captured in this portrait. The veins visible on the pictorial layer create a captivating relief and remind us that it was painted in 1881.

About the artist:

Charles-Edmond Daux was a French painter and illustrator, born on January 26, 1850, in Reims (Champagne-Ardenne), where he passed away on September 13, 1928. He studied under Alexandre Cabanel (1823-1889), a prominent academic painter during the Second Empire. During his time in Cabanel's studio, he formed friendships with several Parisian artists from the Belle Epoque, including Maurice Poirson (1846-1882), Armand-Eugène Bach (1850-1921), and John Singer Sargent (1856-1925). Together, they traveled through Spain in search of inspiration.

Simultaneously, Charles-Edmond Daux was a member of the Salon des Artistes Français, exhibiting there from 1878 and receiving recognition in 1886. His explorations extended to North Africa, where he gradually embraced the Orientalist style. One of his notable works, "Woman playing with doves," was showcased at the Salon in 1880 and is currently exhibited at the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
