Belle-île-en-Mer

A 20th century French School oil Impressionist painting on wood panel signed by Paul Louis Mestrallet (1886-1961) and dated 1924. The painting location, Belle-île, is a rocky French island located in the Atlantic Ocean, south of Brittany. On the back is the Parisian address of Mestrallet's atelier in the 5th arrondissement, near the Luxembourg Gardens.

This is an Impressionist work with light divided by shade and tree branches in the foreground. There is a strong feeling of harmony and dynamism perceptible in the landscape's movement, as seen in the tree line accompanying the hill's curve. The brushstroke splitting oscillates perfectly between planes with vibrant colors that catch the eye. The significant use of material on the panel produces a depth of color and light.

About the artist: Paul Louis Mestrallet was born in Paris in 1886 and died in 1961. After training at Beaux-Arts, he traveled around France in search of the right light and landscape. Using the technique of split brush, his work is known for an uninhibited use of bright colors. Apart from Brittany, Vendée, and the Mediterranean basin, Mestrallet painted many Parisian bridges and produced many works of still life with generous color and texture. By 1909 his work started appearing in Parisian salons and included Salon des Indépendants et des Artistes Français. Today, several French museums have collected works by Mestrallet.
