Les Poules

20th-century French School oil painting on wood panel signed Marie Calvès (1883-1957) in the lower right. The work has a little texture to the touch.

An Impressionist view of a farmhouse featuring hens in front of a haystack. The brushstrokes are rapid and textured, adding a sense of movement to the scene. The technique brings vibrancy and dynamism to the depiction. The color palette enhances the overall view while the wooden frame complements the organic hues of the artwork.

About the artist:

Marie-Didière Calvès, known as Marie Calvès, was a French painter born on December 14, 1883, in the 9th arrondissement of Paris. She grew up in the countryside and her father, Georges Calvès (1848-1924), was a member of the Society of French Artists with a focus on rural life. Under her father's guidance, young Marie embarked on her artistic journey, and her talent was first recognized in 1895 when she was just twelve years old at the Salon of French Artists.

Despite her father's influence and encouragement towards landscapes, Marie discovered her true passion early on: painting dogs. She devoted herself fervently to portraying canines, earning recognition and critical acclaim. In 1927, at the Salon of French Artists, she was awarded the bronze medal, marking a significant milestone in her career. She continued to exhibit her paintings until 1938, consistently receiving accolades and prizes for her scenes featuring dogs, both in hunting or leisure settings.

Marie exhibited her works in Paris and gained a reputation among collectors of hunting-themed art. Her distinctive style was characterized by a vibrant color palette and a keen sense of narrative exploration. She passed away on January 26, 1957, in Soncourt-sur-Marne, Haute-Marne.
