Jardin Potager

20th-century oil painting on hardboard under glass by Pierre Agnès (1898–1964).
Titled Jardin potager à Maisons-Laffitte, rue de Mexico (Yvelines) (Kitchen Garden on Rue de Mexico, Maisons-Laffitte). Artist’s stamp on reverse.

This is a particularly special painting, remarkable for its perspective, brushwork, and poetic use of color. The subject is a single figure tending his vegetable garden beneath flowering trees, a quiet moment rendered with sensitivity and warmth.

The condition is excellent, likely thanks to its preservation under glass. The frame is also in good condition. A distinctive and lyrical piece, it would make a beautiful addition to any collection.

About the artist:

Born in Maisons-Laffitte (northwest of Paris), Pierre Agnès grew up in his father’s ornamental ironworking studio. In 1915, he entered the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, though his studies were interrupted by World War I, during which he served as a volunteer.

After the war, Agnès worked as a draughtsman and decorator in Paris and the surrounding region, while continuing to paint privately. Starting in 1922, he found regular inspiration in Brittany—first in Loctudy, then in Camaret—capturing the region’s changing light and coastal atmosphere.

He exhibited at the Salon des Beaux-Arts (1930–1932) and the Salon des Indépendants (1948–1949). His recurring subjects—countryside landscapes, seascapes, scenes of everyday life, family portraits, animal studies, and wartime sketches—reflect an art deeply rooted in lived experience and memory.
