Medici Vase

Original oil painting from Europe: French oil on canvas still life painting from the early 1900's in the Dutch School Style, inspired by the tradition of Dutch decorative works of the 17th century. This is the second of two paintings we have in this style and this painting is slightly larger than the other.

This framed oil on painting canvas depicts an exquisite bouquet of flowers capturing light and contrasting with the dark canvas. The medici vase is visible through the flowers, which are arranged in a symphony of unexpected contrast and configuration. The composition has tulips, roses, daffodils, morning glories, carnations, honeysuckle and more.

Unsigned, this early 20th century French Dutch School style still-life painting, set in carved gilt wood frame, is of extraordinary quality and condition. The canvas is smooth without excess material, the brush stroke is regular and refined.

A complex composition with a rich palette, full of color variations. Each petal is refined by its shadows and reflections, offering a very beautiful overall depth to the work. The sophisticated shadows on the baroque vase sublimates the bouquet with a concern for botanical precision, like the 17th-century Dutch master Ambrosius Bosschaert the Elder (1573-1621).

There are some chips on the outer corners of the frame and the painting itself has some veins from age, and a few cracks which we show in details in the photos. The cracked painting have been closed with a professional beeswax compound to keep the pieces in place. This state does not prevent the painting from undergoing treatments or restorations in the future. The cracks and veins are true to age and do not compromise the condition of the painting. A true collector's piece in a rare and sought after style from an era of great artistic mastery.

  • Overall size: 28.7" x 24.4" / 73cm x 62cm.

  • Provenance: Netherlands.
  • Signed: No.
  • Date: Early XXth century.
  • Condition: The canvas has a patinated effect which brings out the veins, in particular at the level of the flowers at the top. There are 3 small restoration marks (top and bottom) visible by small, whiter veins (last 2 pictures) where the cracking paint has been closed with beeswax compound to protect the painting and allow for future restorations if that is desirable. The frame has impacts and traces due to age as well as small gaps in the angles.
