Homard & Huitres

20th century Belgian School oil painting on carton signed Joris De Bruyne (1896-1965) in the lower right. The work is smooth to the touch.

A still life painting featuring a lobster and oysters executed with fine and dynamic brushstrokes. The contours of the elements produce a vaporous effect, imparting a sense of movement. The composition adopts a minimalist approach, showcasing a harmony of curves and geometry. The palette maintains a realistic tone, and the moderate light originates from the right.

About the artist:

Joris De Bruyne was a Belgian painter, engraver, linguist, and poet, born in Bruges on March 14, 1896. Initiating his artistic journey as a self-taught artist, he later enrolled in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Brussels. Following his service in the Belgian Army during WWI, he earned a doctorate in literature.

Influenced by expressionism and realism, De Bruyne primarily focused on painting still lifes and creating cold, poetic landscapes with subdued lighting. He actively participated in the artistic salons of Belgium throughout his life, and he passed away on July 23, 1965, in Brussels.
