La Fôret
19th-century oil on canvas signed lower right Eug. Bourgeois for Eugène Victor Bourgeois (1855–1909).
A forest landscape in the tradition of late 19th-century woodland painting. The foreground clearing is held in shadow, while light expands toward the center of the composition. A solitary figure, a woman carrying a basket, introduces scale and presence within the woods and harvested landscape.
The treatment of light is measured and deliberate, giving the landscape weight as a subject rather than as backdrop. A restrained palette and controlled handling contribute to the overall sense of quiet focus.
