Avant L'orage
20th-century oil painting on hardboard, signed F. Gantois (20th century) in the lower right.
A countryside landscape featuring dense clusters of foliage in the foreground, mirroring the choppy movement and unrest of the sky through both texture and color, as well as the interplay of light and shadow. The perspective draws the eye toward a distant outcropping of trees beneath a heavy, overcast sky.
Parts of the landscape were executed with a palette knife, enhancing the patchwork effect of the sky and reinforcing the painting's sense of intensity. The foreground, by contrast, is worked with rich yet more controlled brushwork. These variations in texture and technique create a convincing sense of movement throughout the composition.
This is a captivating landscape, distinguished by its atmospheric character, generous scale, and the complexity of its contrasts.
