French Still Life Painting: French School of the 20th century oil on carton signed Benn (1905-1989). The work is a unique mixture between an abstract and figurative composition. In this special piece, Benn demonstrates his passion for shapes and  geometry, while keeping a respectful attachment to realism. This still life is a skillful mix of styles, resulting in an interest and peacefulness to the whole.

About the artist: Benn is the pseudonym of Bencjon Rabinowicz (1905-1989). Benn was a French painter of Russian origin, associated with the School of Paris. His childhood took place in Białystok, Poland and his gift for drawing was so evident, that he began giving private lessons at the age of 12.

He won a scholarship to study for three years in Paris, where he went on to attend the Academy of Fernand Léger (1881-1955). Been lived in Paris during the Roaring Twenties, and he fell in love with Ghéra, a dancer and musician, whom he married in 1938. A year after the wedding, Rabinowicz was deployed under the French flag. He returned to Paris in 1939 and began to take an interest in sculpture. Unfortunately, shortly thereafter he was interned with his wife at the Beaune-la-Rolande Camp. After being released the couple went into hiding where he met other artists and thinkers from the period, including: Paul Éluard, Marc Vaux, Frédéric Joliot-Curie and Robert Debré.

After the Liberation, Benn returned to Paris for good. In 1949, along with his great friend Marc Chagall (1887-1985), Benn created a company of painters and sculptors. In 1966, the Association "Friends of the Work of the Painter Benn" was founded. He died in 1989, after a long and distinguished career. He bequeathed part of his work to the city of Rueil-Malmaison near Paris
