Un Ciel

$1,200.00

19th-century oil on canvas mounted on board, signed lower left S. Fuchu (19th–20th century) and dated 1899.

A peaceful French countryside scene, where dark trees stand against a luminous sky and reflective body of water. From a distance, the composition appears simple and almost matte, but a closer look reveals remarkable depth, subtle perspective, and beautifully observed detail.

The artist uses controlled, confident brushwork with occasional textured passages in the clouds and foliage. Influenced by Post-Impressionism, the painting conveys a gentle sense of movement while maintaining a quiet, contemplative atmosphere without relying on heavy impasto.

An expansive sky and luminous blue tones bathe the landscape in light, while the contrast between sunlit and shaded areas creates depth and warmth throughout the composition.

The original 19th-century wood and stucco frame is richly decorated with stylized floral motifs that beautifully complement the simplicity of the rural scene. It retains some expected wear and minor losses to the inner molding, consistent with its age, adding to the painting's authentic character.

  • Overall Size: 19.49" x 27.95" / 49.5cm x 71cm.
  • Size without the frame: 18.70" x 27.17" / 47.5cm x 69cm.
  • Overall Weight: 10.4 lbs / 4.73 kg.
  • Country of origin: France.
  • Signature: Yes, S. Fuchu (19th century & 20th century).
  • Creation date: 1899.
  • Conditions: The canvas displays a slight warp along the right side, though this does not affect the overall presentation or appreciation of the artwork. A few small areas of paint loss are visible in the sky, primarily in the upper left portion of the composition. An old, stable crack measuring approximately 2.3" (5.8 cm) is visible diagonally near the upper right corner. Also noted are a few surface marks, traces, and age-related veins, all consistent with the age of the artwork. The antique carved frame has a loss measuring approximately 1.18" (3 cm) in the upper right corner. This area has been regilded but not reconstructed (see second-to-last photo). A thin metal rod with a rounded tip remains visible and extends to the height of the adjacent moldings. Based on its age, rounded end, and rigidity, we believe it may be an original structural element intended to reinforce or stabilize the frame moldings (see second-to-last photo). The finer inner and outer moldings (or trim elements) also display numerous losses and areas of wear. These sections have been regilded to harmonize the overall presentation, but the missing decorative elements have not been replaced. Taken as a whole, these signs of wear remain entirely consistent with an original period carved frame that has retained its authentic character for more than 120 years.
