Lucy-sur-Cure

$940.00

20th-century oil on canvas, signed lower left (illegible). The location “Lucy-sur-Cure” is inscribed on the reverse, referring to the Burgundian village in the Yonne region, known for its wooded landscapes, winding waterways, and preserved natural scenery along the Cure River.

A wildly expressive and overgrown landscape, alive with color, movement, and dense vegetation. The composition feels almost entirely consumed by foliage and brushstroke, so much so that the small crouched figure tucked into the lower right corner reveals itself only gradually. The scale of the surrounding growth dwarfs the figure entirely, creating a powerful sensation of immersion within nature.

The brushwork is highly textured and borders on abstraction, with energetic impasto and layered strokes creating a vibrating, almost wind-swept surface. The artist prioritizes atmosphere and sensation over strict realism, allowing color and movement to carry the composition. Brilliant autumnal tones burst across the canvas, punctuated by soft passages of light near the center that draw the eye gently through the landscape.

There is something distinctly untamed about the scene. Nature feels dominant and self-sufficient here, with human presence reduced to a quiet and almost incidental role within the larger rhythm of the landscape.

The painting is beautifully elevated by its warm ochre gilt frame, which provides an elegant counterpoint to the wildness and spontaneity of the composition.
